Understanding the Comet Wild 2 Mineralogy in Samples from the Stardust Mission
نویسنده
چکیده
The status of the solid materials and mineralogical and petrological results of the Stardust mission to comet 81P/Wild 2 are presented. This mission became the first successful samplereturn mission since the Apollo project. This time the challenges were much less related to the availability of state-of-the-art analytical capabilities. Still, dedicated tools had to be developed to manipulate the samples that were all firmly embedded in the tracks they made when decelerating in the silica aerogel tiles of the collector. The comet particles were loosely bonded aggregates that shed their grains along the entire length of these tracks. It appears that most of the original comet minerals survived but interactions of debris with melted aerogel occurred and new minerals were made, adding to the incredibly, and unanticipated, diversity of the comet minerals, including some that so far were know only in meteorites. The latter alone showed that transport distances in the solar nebula extended all the way out to beyond Pluto into the Kuiper Belt of icy, comet-like, bodies. The full extent of the scientific yield of this mission is still unknown, promising but stressing current models of the formation of solar systems.

Mineralogy and Petrology of Stardust Particles Extracted from the Walls
Introduction: Since the return to Earth of the Wild 2 comet samples by the Stardust mission, most of the studies have been performed on terminal particles located at the end of the deceleration tracks. However, the major fraction of the cometary material is unevenly distributed along the track walls [1,2]. Particles within samples extracted from the walls show strong collectinduced thermal alte...
متن کاملVariety of Organic Matter in Stardust Return Samples from Comet 81p/wild 2
Introduction: The Stardust mission captured dust particles from comet 81P/Wild 2 and returned them to Earth. Since this material has been cryogenically stored within the comet for billions of years, the Star-dust samples represent early nebular condensates and some presolar material, identified by anomalous isotopic fractionation outside the range of solar values. Carbonaceous matter has been i...

Introduction: The Stardust mission obtained the first dust samples in the coma of an active comet for laboratory analyses. Earlier chemical data on dust from an active comet came from the GIOTTO and VEGA missions to comet Halley [1]. For decades aggregate interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) were available from parent bodies other than those of meteorites [2], i.e. comets or comet-like bodies. ...
متن کاملNM-SCALE ANATOMY OF AN ENTIRE STARDUST CARROT TRACK. K.Nakamura-Messenger
Introduction: Comet Wild-2 samples collected by NASA's Stardust mission are extremely complex, heterogeneous , and have experienced wide ranges of alteration during the capture process. There are two major types of track morphologies: " carrot " and " bulbous , " that reflect different structural/compositional properties of the impactors. Carrot type tracks are typically produced by compact or ...
